How to take more responsibility?
I used to be a hypocrite.
I’d publicly say that shaming people was bad.
But then I’d do it all the time…
I’d shame someone for being out of shape,
I’d blame someone for being so stupid,
I’d shame someone for allowing himself to be a victim.
And that someone…. was always me.
For a long time, my only understanding of “Taking responsibility” was that it meant taking the blame…
So I would blame myself (or shame myself) for pretty much everything.
But taking responsibility isn’t just about accepting blame, it’s also about taking ownership for the choices we have.
It’s not only about looking in the past and pointing fingers, it’s also about what we do in the present and how we come out stronger in the future.
Shaming, blaming never brings anyone forward. All it does is disempower.
Taking responsibility however allows us to create and discover meaning.
It empowers us to move forward and help others.
So now, if I ever feel out of shape, do something stupid or feel like a victim…
I don’t shame myself…
Instead I look at how these situations can empower me to become a better, stronger human being.
I take responsibility through the choices that I make to move forward.
What about you? Have you been a hypocrite?
