How to deal with people’s opinions?

JK Rowling once sent a new book series to a few publishers.

She didn’t receive the best feedback and was even told:

She should probably take writing classes.

But JK Rowling was already one of the most successful authors in the world at this point.

And she had sent the book using an alias.

Yet the opinion of someone from an established publishing company was that her work was amateur.

For me, this is the perfect example of how someone’s opinion is just someone’s opinion.

If the opinion doesn’t serve us, then we don’t need to listen to it.

I was told by a few people that starting my own coaching business was a bad idea.

And that was just their opinion.

(And also them projecting their own limitations onto me.)

But regardless, I had the choice of what meaning I assigned to their opinions.

And because their opinion didn’t get me closer to starting my coaching business, I chose to ignore them.

People will always have opinions, even people that you trust, that you respect or who are well established in their field.

But you will always have a choice, the choice to assign any value that you want to their opinion.

And also the choice to ignore it.

In these situations, I like to ask myself: Does this opinion get me any closer to my goals? To my dreams?

If the answer is no, then I politely choose to ignore it and just get on with my life :)

It only becomes real when you give it meaning.

Let me know in the comments about times it’s paid off to ignore someone’s opinion.
