How to improve your memory?
I grew up always thinking I had a bad memory.
I struggled to remember History dates, my German vocabulary, I’d pretty much always forget someone's name within 2 seconds of them telling me.
I just assumed this was part of who I was. I just didn’t have a good memory.
I’ve had other beliefs like this over the years: I’m not very flexible. I’m not a reader. I’m not good at musical instruments. I’m terrified of horses.
I’d even bond with people over these “Me too I’m soo inflexible” - “I’m more of a movies person than a reader”.
Well it wasn’t until 2 years ago when I did a memory training course.
That I realized the power of the language we use.
And how it can shape our worlds and especially our thinking around what’s possible.
If you constantly tell yourself you have a bad memory, of course your memory is going to stay bad.
If you say you’re not a reader or you’re not good at musical instruments, this is just going to reinforce these beliefs.
So if you genuinely want to change these old stories about yourself, one of the first things you can do is change the language that you use.
A super easy way to do this is by using these two words “...until Now”.
I’ve never been much of a reader… until now. I just don’t have a good memory … until now.
Until now… I’ve been terrified of horses.
Using these two words will take away the permanency and tell your brain that things can actually change.
Combine that with a bit of effort and determination and there’s pretty much no limit to what you can teach yourself.
Also for the record, now I’d actually say I have a pretty good memory
Let me know in the comments something you have not been good at… until now.
