A few weeks ago my dad turned 60
And something about it really struck me…
After a long weekend of celebrations.
I couldn’t help but be impressed by the amount of close friends that he had.
Despite moving countries and living abroad.
He was still really close to most of his childhood best friends.
As I spoke to them over the weekend and listened to some of their speeches.
One thing that kept coming up was how good my dad was at staying in touch.
They were all so grateful for his constant efforts at remaining in their lives.
And when I saw them that weekend, laughing their heads off, acting like teenagers again.
Telling all these hilarious stories from back in the day.
I couldn’t help but see how precious that was and how important these moments were.
We can always make new friends but we can never recreate long friendships.
It’s so easy to let life take over and lose touch with old best friends.
Especially when you move countries or even cities.
I am myself guilty of watching Netflix after a long day instead of calling one of them.
Or telling myself that they haven’t called me so why should I call them.
But if I learnt anything from that weekend, it is that close friendships are one of the most important things in life.
When I celebrate my 60th birthday. I want to be surrounded by my lifelong best friends just like my dad was.
And that starts by making the effort already today.
It’s a long term investment that will really pay off.
What about you? Are you good at staying in touch with old friends?
Also can you guess which one is my dad?
