I know I shouldn’t be doing this

I know I’m going to regret this later.

Yet something keeps pulling me down the rabbit hole and I’m struggling to stop.

I’m just about to click on one more of those irresistible clickbait title youtube videos.

When I have a short moment of clarity and I start a countdown in my head:

5,4,3,2,1 GO.

I manage to snap out of it, close the window and get back to what I should be doing.

I learnt this ridiculously simple life hack from Mel Robbins.

It seems so silly and it’s hard to believe it can possibly work, but it genuinely does.

When my alarm goes off and I’m considering staying in bed… 5,4,3,2,1 and I get up.

When I should be going to the gym but I’m sitting on the couch… 5,4,3,2,1 and I go put my workout clothes on.

By counting down from 5 you break the negative procrastination cycle that you’re in.

It temporarily limits your ability to emotionally negotiate with yourself.

And there’s just something about a countdown that propels you into action.

So next time you catch yourself procrastinating, try out this technique.

And if you want to learn more about the science behind, read Mel Robbins’ book: The 5 Second Rule.
