Why I chose progress over perfect?

You might be surprised,

But I completely disagree with the saying: “Practice makes perfect”.

I don’t disagree with it because of the message it tries to convey.

I disagree with it because of the word “Perfect''.

For me “Perfect” is a dangerous word.

It’s dangerous because it’s subjective and can be misinterpreted.

Perfectionism rarely leads to perfection, instead it leads to disappointment.

In 2022, as I take on new activities like horse riding and public speaking.

But also as I continue to play the piano and go to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

I don’t want to be constantly disappointed.

I want to be motivated to keep going.

That’s why I’d much rather go with another saying:

“Practice makes Progress”.

Because this one allows me to focus on the progress I have made.

It allows me to compare myself to my past self,

Not to a future “perfect” self I haven’t yet reached (or will ever reach).

So next time you want to get good at something:

Focus on making progress, not on being perfect.

It’s a way more sustainable approach and can also improve your motivation.

What’s one activity you would be good at today if you had sought progress instead of perfection?
