How to deal with negative emotions?
When I was about 5 years old,
My 60 year old neighbour burnt me with a cigarette.
It was a very painful experience and I still have the scar to show it.
Obviously it was an accident (or at least I hope so).
But I received an important message that day:
“The red light at the end of those smokey sticks is very hot. “
And I knew to stay away from it in the future.
When you accidentally put your hand on a hot stove, hopefully your reaction is to remove it as quickly as possible.
The pain you feel, although excruciating, is protecting you from being hurt further.
The pain provides you with a message:
“Take your hand off the hot stove!”
Without the pain, you would keep your hand on it and things wouldn’t end very well.
Well Negative Emotions have the exact same purpose.
Even though they can hurt, they are there to provide you with a message and to protect you.
They are important and healthy to have.
When we ignore them, it’s the equivalent of keeping our hand on the stove:
Things won’t end very well.
So next time you feel a Negative Emotion, don’t ignore it.
See it for what it really is: a message.
Negative Emotions are a part of life.
They’re a sign that you’re alive. Be thankful that you have them.
What about you? What Negative Emotions do you have a tendency to ignore?
